Is your HR policy manual ready for Uganda's amended employment law?
The Employment (Amendment) Act, 2025 changes how employers in Uganda must handle harassment, casual staff, sick leave, discipline, probation, redundancy and more. Future Options helps you close the gaps before they become disputes.
Outdated HR policies create risk. They expose organisations to employee disputes, inconsistent management decisions, financial liabilities and proceedings before Labour Officers or the Industrial Court. The amendments touch many parts of the employment relationship, so contracts, procedures and templates need reviewing together — not patched one clause at a time.
What's changing
Eight areas of the law every employer should review
A short guide to where the Act has the biggest practical impact on day-to-day HR management.
Workplace harassment
Employers must establish and display measures to prevent sexual harassment, covering intimidation, complaints, investigations, retaliation and employee protection.
Casual employment
Continuous casual engagement is capped at six months. Short breaks followed by re-engagement may not interrupt continuity — worker classification and records need review.
Sick leave
Eligible employees may receive full wages for two months of illness, then half wages for a further four. Dismissal on medical grounds needs a medical opinion and proper procedure.
Breastfeeding & childcare
Employers must provide appropriate time, space or facilities for breastfeeding and childcare for children aged three to 36 months, subject to prescribed standards.
Discipline & dismissal
Dismissal must rest on valid reasons, evidence, fair procedure and proper documentation, with employees given time and representation to respond to allegations.
Probation
Employees who keep working after probation expires may be deemed confirmed. Notice during probation has increased from seven days to one month.
Redundancy & severance
Redundancies now need at least 30 days' advance notice to the Labour Commissioner and relevant union. Statutory severance is one month's salary per completed year.
Migrant workers
Employers recruiting non-citizens must monitor occupations restricted by Gazette notice and determine whether exemptions are required.
